Welcome to the Children’s Division
At Voices Beyond Assault, our Children’s Division is dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable survivors—children affected by sexual assault and domestic violence. We provide specialized care to help them heal from trauma and regain a sense of safety, trust, and hope.
The Importance of This Division
Children who experience or witness abuse face lifelong consequences, from emotional trauma
to developmental delays. More than 60% of children exposed to intimate partner violence are
also direct victims of abuse (National Domestic Violence Hotline, 2021). Our work is critical in
breaking the cycle of violence, offering children a path to healing and recovery.
Understanding the Impact on Children
Prevalence
1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the U.S. will experience sexual abuse before
they turn 18 (CDC, 2021)
Witnessing Violence
Over 15 million children witness domestic
violence each year,leading to emotional
and behavioral problems, trauma, and developmental delays (National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence, 2020).
Long-Term Effects
Childhood trauma is linked to a greater likelihood
of mental healthdisorders, substance abuse, and even chronic health conditions in adulthood (CDC,
2020).
Lasting Effects of Abuse on Children
The trauma from abuse can lead to severe emotional and psychological disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociation, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. The earlier we can provide support and therapy, the more we can mitigate these long-term effects, giving children the tools they need to heal and thrive.
Abuse and neglect can lead to developmental delays in cognitive and motor skills. It can also impair brain development, impacting memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities. Addressing these delays through specialized intervention is crucial in helping children catch up and build a foundation for future success.
Beyond emotional and developmental challenges, childhood trauma is linked to a greater likelihood of chronic health issues in adulthood, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. This makes it essential to address both the physical and emotional consequences of abuse as part of a comprehensive care plan.

Exposure to abuse during childhood significantly increases the risk of perpetuating violence in future generations. Children who witness or endure domestic violence are at a higher risk of becoming victims or perpetrators themselves. Intervening early is essential in breaking this cycle and fostering healthy, non-violent relationships as they grow
