At Voices Beyond Assault, we are expanding our commitment to supporting survivors by launching our new Domestic Violence Division. This initiative reflects our recognition that sexual assault and domestic violence often intersect, requiring a holistic approach to address the diverse needs of survivors.
The Importance of This Division
Our organization began with a focus on supporting survivors of sexual assault. Over time, we observed a significant overlap between sexual assault and domestic violence. Many survivors experience both forms of violence, and addressing one without considering the other can leave critical needs unmet. Our Domestic Violence Division is a vital step in providing comprehensive care and support to all survivors, acknowledging and addressing these interconnected issues.
Understanding the Intersection
Domestic violence and sexual assault are deeply interconnected, impacting millions globally. Here are some critical statistics:
Prevalence
1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men will experience
severe intimate partner violence, including
physical violence, sexual violence, in their
lifetime (CDC, 2020).
Overlap
More than 50% of women who experience
sexual violence by an intimate partner also
endurephysical abuse (NCADV, 2021).
Impact on Children
Over 15 million children witness domestic
violence each year in the U.S., leading to physical, emotional, and psychological trauma (National
Coalition Against Domestic Violence).
