Welcome to Our Community
At Voices Beyond Assault, we proudly introduce our LGBTQ Division, dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Our goal is to provide inclusive, affirming support to empower every survivor on their journey to healing.
The Importance of This Division
Sexual assault and domestic violence impact the LGBTQ community at disproportionately high rates. Members of the LGBTQ community often face additional layers of discrimination, stigma, and a lack of understanding from mainstream support services, which can further compound their trauma. By creating a safe and inclusive space, we ensure that all survivors feel seen, heard, and validated. This division is vital in fostering resilience and healing within the LGBTQ community.
Understanding the LGBTQ Experience
LGBTQ individuals face distinct and often heightened risks of violence:
Prevalence
Nearly half (47%) of bisexual women and
more than one in four (26%) gay men have
experienced rape, physical violence, or
stalking by an intimate partner (CDC, 2010).
Discrimination
LGBTQ survivors often encounter
discrimination and barriers when seeking help,
with 85% of transgender survivors reporting mistreatmentby domestic violence service
providers (U.S. Transgender Survey, 2015).
Youth Impact
LGBTQ youth are at a higher risk of
experiencing sexual violence, with studies
showing they are twice as likely as their
non-LGBTQ peers to be assaulted (CDC, 2019).
Our Mission
We strive to create safe, inclusive spaces where every individual can access the resources and care they need.
